We keep Jackie gated into the kitchen during the day (when we are not home to supervise), and have a walker come around lunchtime to take her outside and play with her / walk her. It has worked out great for us. Especially since she sleeps in her crate at night (
which she LOVES, by the way . . . but I won't restate all of the great things everyone has said above), and I did not want her to be crated all day & all night.
