My 3 cats get along quite well, but I must say, my 12 year old cat was not
too thrilled in the beginning to have 2 new cats in his life. When my other
12 year old cat died last year from heart disease, our other cat, Billy, who
was also 12 was really depressed, he missed his companion. He just seemed in a slump.
I then went and got two new cats within 4 months of each other and introduced them SLOWLY to Billy - let me say, that our Billy was not at all thrilled in the beginning and he was not used to having "young ones" in the
house. It took awhile, but they will all lay together by the fire place. One of
the cats I adopted has turned out to be quite dominant and turned out to
be a special needs cat who is on prednisone for the rest of his life, but he
seems to be in charge. I also had my other Corgi at this time, Betsy, who
never gave the cats the time of day. She could have cared less - cats never
bothered her and she even let them eat out of her bowl when she was eating.
Well, after she passed and we brought our Cody home(now 5 months old),
let me say, the cats were not the least bit happy because all Cody wanted
to do was Chase them. I mean, imagine being with a litter of puppies, then
being taken away and coming into a home with 3 cats & TAILS! what could
be more fun than to chase cats and try and touch their tails. In the beginning I was wondering if we made a mistake because Cody would just not give them any peace. Two of my cats literally spent the entire month
on the second floor of our house because they were terrified of our new
Corgi. Our more dominant cat was not about to let a Corgi bully him - ha!
However, someone recommended using the "soda can" method which worked.
I filled an empty soda can with several pennies and taped over the top. I
actually made about 5 of these and put the cans in sperate rooms. Anyway,
whenever Cody would attempt to chase the cat, I would throw the can
near him(never at him) or shake it and say a firm "no chase" Honestly, within
a weekend, he quit the behavior and now they are all living quite peacefully.
The cats all roam along with him in the same rooms and the chasing has stopped.
Actually, my one cat taunts him now, by laying on his back in front of him,
trying to tease the dog and to get him to chase him and Cody knows better;
he just lays down with this look on his face like "Mom says I can't chase
you, so I will just have to lay here" It is quite funny. My one cat and Cody
were actually laying in the dog bed together yesterday and this was with the
cat that hated the dog the most in the beginning.
So things can work out with patience, but it sure did test my patience for
the first month.
