Who told you you need a performance dog? I don't think a breeder is going to be able to pick out a pup for you at 8 weeks and be able to tell you that they will positively perform for you. But you will want a pup that isn't too shy or overly dominant, somewhere right in the middle type of personality.(just my guess) If you want to do agility, you don't need a "show quality dog"; but you would want to do basic puppy classes and the following classes after that, eventually getting into agility classes that are offered - you will have to check what trainers in your area offers that- I know the one place here really doesn't do the "real agility" classes until they are at least 18 months - 2 years old. However, they offer very beginner stuff - such as getting them aquainted to the tunnels and other equipment.
I think whether your dog is going to do agility and like it or not will just depend on its personality and the type of training you two do together/ the classes you take and how much time you are willing to put into it - but I hear it is a lot of fun.
I am not personally familiar with all of this, but have read some stuff about it and talked with my dogs trainer, so maybe others can give you some info.
