The Police in New Zealand celebrated their 50th year last weekend of having dogs for police work. The national police dog training facilties are a walking distance away from where I live.
I will never do a story about police dogs who are used for attacking people because I consider that the wrong use of a dog. A German Shepherd named Edge was entered in this year's NZ Canine Heroes awards but I placed that dog last among the entries for the category he was entered into. Edge was told to attack a man who was trying to kill himself and in the process, Edge got very seriously stabbed. I say if any one want to kill themselves, let them do it and not risk a dog from getting painfully injured and killed. Last year another German Shepherd won the service category of the canine awards for attacking a suspected crim or two.Dogs used for tracking is excellent but not sent in to tear a suspected crim to shreds and be in the firing line themselves.
