Chip did that a couple of times when he was little and when I caught him, I put him back in the house and told him that he must not have really wanted to go by by so he could stay to home. Now if I let him walk to the car, he goes to the car but most of the time, he is on leash or I carry him. It isn't worth the worry of him getting hurt.
