My Reba has a crate that is left open in the kitchen and when she feels like it she is free to come and go to her private space. The only time I ever lock her in it is when she is acting "skitish" like earthquakes (we're in California), lightening storms, or 4th of July (when I know that she would otherwise jam herself under the beds for fear of the noise, etc.), but then she's 12 years old and well past the potty training/destructive puppy stage. I rescued her as an adult so she was crate trained already prior to her "second life" with me. Crates are wonderful. Wish I'd known about them ages ago when I had puppies.
