So sorry that Duchess is unwell.
A liver ailment per se can be contained though it's a rather generalisation terminology. Usually damage to the liver is caused when toxins penetrate the interior of the liver cells. The vet may suggest that Duchess is given Milk Thistle for Dogs medication. Whatever Duchess has got in this regard, it most likely is the result of things that happened before you and her had met.
Some vets mistakenly diagnose a liver disease when the actual problem is Cushings Disease. Cushings is a glandular disorder and medication such as Milk Thistle would be useless. There are holistic treatments for Cushings.
I have access to advice from many sources ( not internet) here, but a vet who is treating Duchess needs to diagnose correctly first.
