I used stainless bowls in Milo's crate when he was a pup. I put it in the front corner of the crate. He never tipped it though. Sometimes there would be a little bit of water spilled but not much. I used a small bowl and filled it half way.
I've seen water bottles made for a dog crate that work in the same way as bottles used for hamsters or bunnies. That would be a solution if your pup keeps spilling water. I agree it must be uncomfortable to sit on a damp or wet blanket! Good luck!
