I agree with Jespah, it sure looks like he is leaving the mark to let everyone know that he was there.
My dogs re-mark the yard all the yard from each other and other dogs all the time. Sometimes I get annoyed when I am in hurry and they are supposed to be taking care of business, but instead they are trying to out mark each other.
