You're lucky if you don't have a climate that makes carpet necessary. That save an awful lot and you can do great things to floors minus wall-to-wall carpet. I got my Taylor at 13 weeks and he had virtually the run of the house from day one and was completely non house trained. But he only ever toileted inside twice - and both times he raced into what I call my utility room - a kind of office/computer/exercycle/ play room at one end of the house and did nice hard poops that were so easy to uplift and left no mark behind.
