I have lived in Australia briefly and was terrified of snakes - never saw one.
I did run into a deadly green mamba in Tanzania - that's a bite you don't survive either, and once when we were kids we were confronted by a rattle snake here in Ontario.
We confront more of the 4 legged variety of wildlife here in Toronto - we seem to be having lots of fox sightings and chasing this winter!
