Does any corgi travel in the backend of a truck with a shell? -

We have purchased a "new" truck to replace our deceased toyota. Yes, first my dog, then my truck which was the same age! So we got an old truck that can haul wood, etc. Problem is it doesn't have the extra seat behind which we put the travel kennel on. We don't have plans to travel in the truck - who can afford the gas. But in those emergencies where our car is being worked on, we would need to travel and wouldn't have room on the front seat for crate and three people. It is a 1972 Chevy with a bench seat. If we camp, we would need to take the truck for the tent and gear.
How old should a corgi be before traveling in the bed of a truck with a shell and the sliding window open that would not cause trauma? We tried it at 6 months with Pepper because the Veri-Kennel was too wide for where my husband had the seat, but we couldn't stand the separation so we bought the Travel kennel that fit perfect on the back seat at our destination.
The risk of a flying dog during an accident is too high for us to consider her loose in the cab. My husband is handy so we could add a hook for a harness and have her/him loose? Not ever having that type of restraint I wouldn't know where to put the hook. First we have to figure out how to put shoulder harness in the truck for us. But this setup the dog would not have it's own seat, only our laps which he/she might consider ideal?
We won't be bringing the truck here until April and maybe with my short legs I'd like a kennel to prop them up, but I doubt that is the case. We won't get a corgi puppy until June so we do have time to plan and install.
I know there was one trip our dog laid on the floorboard, lulled to sleep with the noise there. Must have been when she was a senior.
I read the thread on crate but no one mentioned the dog traveling in a camper shell.
