Wow, lots of good ideas here - thanks! I picked up a few doggy clothes (all too small) and some toddler t's over the weekend to try. The toddler t's would have been nice but they were to tight across the back and too bunchy over the belly/chest. I think a longer doggy t-shirt (like the football one posted) made for dogs with the forward arm holes could work.
It really doesn't need to be waterproof, as it's the road grit that's the main problem. There is so much construction on our street that it's almost a dirt road at this point. I can try to wipe her down but it's stuck in all that lovely white fur and it comes back out slowly later, all over everything.
I'm almost thinking a tube-top type of thing would be very easy to use, just a piece of lightweight fabric with elastic over each end. It would be super easy to make, and since my dog hates putting her arms into t-shirts it would be nice for her, too.
