My two go most places with me. I am single so getting them into training programs was essential. I wanted a dog who could go places with me.
Of course, the weather dictates a lot of this. In the fall and spring when it's cool I have no issues taking them with me. Winter if it is mild they will go with me in the car but in the summer they tend to stay home a lot more.
If I really need to do shopping, it goes like this: a store for me, a store for them, a store for me, a store for them. A store for them means they allow dogs inside. Mostly pet stores but my favorite is the Orvis Flagship store in manchester VT! They have a sign on the door: Dogs are welcome! Love that store!
But since life w/ Tucker and Lulu, I look for things to do with the dogs. And if you look, it is amazing how many things go on for dogs and dog lovers. This past summer the Pet Professionals organization had monthly Dog Happy Hours on Sunday afternoons. Bring your dog, have a few drinks, a burger, etc. The minor league ball club had Bark at the Park - bring your dog to the ball game. Rescue organizations do all kind of benefit activities that are fun for humans and dogs. Border Collie Rescue of New England had a great weekend last summer letting dogs and handlers try flyball, agility, rally, herding, games, etc.
I have no kids and all the assorted activities that go with them - so I look for fun things to do with the dogs. Always meet interesting people who love their dogs too.
