Sassy's new found friend - 03-10-2007, 01:40 PM

I have had many a visitor since getting Sassy, but this one took the cake. Sassy and I were out in the yard she was playing and I was drinking coffee sitting on the swing telling her to leave the cardinals alone and let them eat, when all of a sudden I hear this menacing growl, hair standing up and I immediately got up to see what she saw and coming into our yard was a full grown Emu (I tried to load picture but it would not load). At first I thought it was an ostrich. I grabbed Sassy, who was going to go and investigate it, and took her in the house. I woke my husband up and said "you need to get up and get the ostrich out of the yard before it hurts Sassy". Of course his reaction was "WHAT?". He got on up and then informed me it was an Emu not an ostrich. I mean the back of this bird stood the height of my 5' fence, then there was the long neck. Well after it blew at us a couple times it decided we were not going to mess with it and it settled down. It was so thirsty, I got a bowl of water and my husband sat it down for it. There was still a fence between it and us. It laid down after taking a drink. I went and let Sassy out and she ran up to the fence (where my husband was standing) and she barked well this Emu was not a bit scared of her, it fluffed out it's feathers on its neck and came right to the fence and you have never seen a dog back up faster than Sassy did Then the Emu stayed for most of the day and kept pacing back and forth on the fence, when it had its back to her Sassy would run after it but when it turned she was back to my husband. Well because of her hurt leg I went and got her and put her in the house.

We (I) called everywhere trying to get someone to come and remove this huge bird, I called the local sherrif's office, animal control, a couple vets trying to find the owner, to no avail. Then my husband walks out to get our mail and a lady drives up in a van and asks if he has seen an Emu, well low and behold this lady walks over to the Emu (which comes over to her right away) she puts a rope on it's neck and walked it out like a dog on a leash. But the part that really took the cake, she walked this Emu to her van and opened the back and that huge bird folded up it's legs and got in the back of her van and off they went. I was simply amazed. Sassy has gone looking for it a couple of times today wondering where it went I suppose.

If I can figure out how to upload the picture I will, I will upload it to my pictures on this site. I could not believe it.
