I don't think so but thats how I used it the first time. Curry combs work by pulling out loose hair from horses, this is the same type of mechanism but used for dogs. The "teeth" are longer to get into the thick undercoat of the dog. It really collects the hair up brilliantly so it isn't flying everywhere. I have that problem with a regular shedding blade, the hair just goes all over my floor or patio.
I used it in the bath first since she needed one and it would really help to scrub the soap in. The fact that it pulled all the loose hair out was a big bonus
