My pem, Zachary is not what you might think of as a "guard dog"; however, he takes very good care of me....whenever I am out of hearing distance, he will come and get me to tell me that: the oven timer is beeping; there is someone at the door, the cat is on the porch and wants to come in, the phone is ringing, etc. I find this very helpful. I once read that Corgis are used as guide dogs for the hearing impaired.
