In my humble opinion as I have stated many a time, there are good breeders that are considered backyard breeders as well as good hobby breeders. There are also bad in both. I think there are good breeders to be found on the internet that do not show there dogs. Many care very much for their animals, take good care of them and are just as careful in placing them in good homes as the hobby breeder. A person just needs to research and make sure they are buying from a quality breeder no matter who they get their pup from. It does sound a bit snobbish to me when someone says that a good breeder has to show their dogs.
