Sounds as though he is under stress of some kind, if this is a sudden development and he is hiding.

First thing I'd do would be to see what has changed for him recently that might be causing him to feel fearful and see if that factor can be revoved.

I'd also clean the carpet area that he has pooped on with something that will remove the smell, e.g diluted white vinegar, as he will naturally gravitate back to this area again, if he can still smell his previous poop.

Others are sure to have suggestions, too.
