I'm looking at your avatar and imagining Charlie making all those sounds!
Peanut makes 3 sounds too. 1- growling sound, “ggrrwww, grrww” 2-barking and chasing the ball, “bark, bark, bark” 3- when I take peanut outside to potty and people are walking on the street “woooooof (low and soft pitch)”

If I softly say "good guard Charlie" he quits with a few of those. If I don't say anything, he escalates to lots of very loud barking.
He also growls when he chases his soccer ball. I kick the ball around the yard. He chases, the entire time saying, "gaarrr, aarrr, aarrr, arrr" like "I'm going to get you ball!"
When we sit in the recliner at night, at some point he usually growls for no apparent reason and it sounds like "Hhhhmmmmrrr", kind of a cross between a growl. grumble and a whine. Then he looks at me and barks once or twice. Not sure what he's trying to communicate, but I'll copy him, growl, grumble and bark back in the same tone. He looks surprised, then furiously licks my face.
Funny, he doesn't seem to growl much when we play tug-of-war, a game he loves!

Also Im starting to use the word "out!" to have Peanut release the ball when we play fetch/tug-o-war ... so far, a little progress =)
