Duncan does fetch for a while with me. With my husband, they have different types of games. He'll bring to my husband, set it down in front of him and as soon as my husband reaches for it, he grabs it. Or, setting it down, turning his head like he isn't paying any attention, then grab it the split second before my husband does. Or, bring it to my husband, set it down, and then put his paw on it to keep him from getting the toy.
He also thinks that he HAS to take a toy everytime he goes outside, just like Charlie, but never has them in a neat pile. I have gotten him almost to bringing one back each time he goes in; but he drops it in the kitchen floor as soon as he is through the door. (sigh) Guess you can't have everything. So now, instead of a pile of toys in the yard, they're all in the kitchen, right in front of the door.
