There's a yahoo list for shy k-9's. I'd recommend you join that.
Also, just give him some time to adjust. Don't baby him when he's afraid. You act normal and he will take cues from you. If you tell him "it's ok" or "poor doggy" him, he'll think it's ok to be afraid or that something is wrong and he should be afraid.
