As a breeder myself, it is sad to say that some other breeders are just like that. But it is not right for them to treat you as such. She should have provided you with a contract ahead of time stating: age of puppy when leaving, spay/neuter, your responsiblities, her responsiblities, etc. She also should at the very first contact with you-before the puppies were even on the ground, told you when she let's them leave, if you can't take the puppy at that age, what she will continue to do with the puppy. If she charges for extra time keeping the puppy, and more. Yes it can get hectic with a litter in the house, but I make time weekly to update those on the waiting list as to what is happening with the litter. I try every week or two weeks to update photos on the website. At 4-6 weeks I let them know which puppy might be acceptable for them and take a deposit then. Puppies leave at 10-12 weeks unless the puppy is going to another breeder where I might let it go at 9 weeks. It's always in my best interest to keep in touch, talk to the new families and make sure that it's the right place for the puppy.
Personally, I think it's a bit shady. Obviously she doesn't have the best interest in the puppy but in getting rid of them. My opinion only though.
I have in the the past been more then happy to keep a puppy longer, for what ever reason. Previously planned vacation, unexpected work trip, or death in the family. I never charge additional-never. I do the same training-crate, housebreaking, leash, etc. that I would do with the puppy I might be keeping. If they are there and need their next vaccination, I do it at no charge.
Hoping that you have better luck next time. There are several of us out on the list that have cardigans, know of responsible and reputable breeders that might have litters or have litters planned ourselves. Just ask and we can point you in the right direction.
