What do you mean your "living situation does not allow him a happy life like he should have"? Do the cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and birds deserve a better life? I think you're right in re-homing him. He doesn't deserve you. The sooner he finds a better home the happier he will be.

David, the decision to put him down is the
parents decison. This person (the daughter) is hoping to find her dog a home so that won't happen. It doesn't help to chew her out the choices aren't hers to make. She's just hoping to help her dog.
I'm hoping she will contact rescue and put him in foster care.
