Peggy - you have put your finger on the apparant problem in the USA - your vets need to be nutrution savvy especially with dogs and cats - almost as much as they are in other aspects of veterinary care. Good nutrition practices for pets forms a big part of veterinary care here in NZ and Australia.
We have specialists in the field of small animal nitrition associated with Massey University and I am sure they would be prepared to impart their knowledge. Also at Massey is the top veterinary school in the Southern Hemisphere.
