You need to see the episode to appreciate the conditions and the results. It's a lot to do with body language and the empowerment of the handler and in taking the dog to where he/she has transgressed moments before eg front door, in car, and displaying calmness through leadership. Re the car, a lot of the particular problem was that the dog was allowed to jump into the car and onto the seat. But when Millan picked up the dog and placed him/her on the seat, the situation of the dog's demeanor changed.
But there are other little things along the way that reinforces what a dog really wants and needs. Incessant barking and other poor behaviour may be the result of insufficient exercising ie not done daily, inadequate time and effort, constantly covering the same route which can be tedious for an intelligent dog who longs for different sights, sounds and smells.
My Pem Charlie is a bit of a charlie (the person not the Corgi) and needs to look beyond such a small horizon.
