AW.....poor thing. It does sound like they used a heavy hand (and maybe a foot, the way it sounds) with her. Just have patience, move slow, show lots of love. It could take quite a while for her to get over it.

Chloe, our chow/corgi mix; seemed to be afraid of men when we got her. My husband would barely raise his voice and she would scrunch up like she was waiting to be hit. Talk about breaking your heart. It took her several months to come to my husband real close without coaxing. Now, she is his velcro dog when on the couch...LOL
