The best way is to try and get a shot of them before the sun sets and widown light is soft and provides some very pleasing results. If you can't get the light inside by opening blinds, drapes or what have you, another great way with flash is to bounce the light off the ceiling or an adjacent wall. I have a Canon S5IS camera with their 430EX flash that allows you to bounce the light off the ceiling, adjacent wall or even the wall behind you. The flash must have the capability of rotating and swiveling the flash head for you to be able to do this, naturally. Just be sure that wall is white!!
