I feel very sorry for the poor dog, but you don't know if the dog is sick, has bad habits or what. So first off the thought of taking this dog off their hands is a big decision. Even if you know of a rescue to take it to, you have to be careful of not letting it come in contact with your dogs until it has been checked by a vet.
I guess you could've taken their phone number and information, that way you could try to make some contacts to help them.
You tell them you can't take the dog, but you might be able to help them find it a new home.
It actually could be worse for the dog, they could've just abandoned it somewhere, but instead they were trying to find it a home.
I sure hope they found it a new home.

Leaving all of this because it is excellent advice. PetSmart's usually have adoption fairs and centers on a regular basis. Talking to some of the staff and/or the trainer would have been an option. All one has to do is google Boxer Rescue, MO or whatever state and you will come up with numerous hits. Or go to <http://www.akc.org> and find the breeds link, rescue contact information can be found as a link under that.
