Being an Australian, Steve had a lot of affinity with New Zealanders and all the schools today in NZ will have Steve as the key subject matter in the classroom. Many children and adults here have cried over learning of his death. I broke it to my wife last night and she was very upset and in disbelief being a very keen fan of Steve. When we last visited Queensland, we could have gone to Steve's Australian Zoo but crocs are not my most favourite animal.
I don't watch a lot of tv - apart from rugby matches, but Steve had a habit of lighting up a screen and almost coming out of the television set and into your living room.
Outside of Australia and NZ, Steve was most popular in the USA which is interesting since the USA has huge responsibilities for the care of environment and I'll leave it to my American Go Corgi friends, to assertain if their people are doing a good job with the world we live in. There will never be another Steve. These days passion and enthusiasm for anything is going out the door - except if you are a terrorist
Today's major newspapers in NZ all had almost their entire front page devoted to Steve and his most untimely death - only the third Australian ever to die from a stingray barb. The metro newspaper from Wellington also carried other stories concerning Steve and a cartoon piece which showd a croc with tears in his eyes, a snake bowing his head and a Koala clinging from a tree branch and saying "crikey."
