I feel horrible but I am trying to do the right thing - 02-19-2008, 11:41 AM

Please before anyone gets on here and bashes me or gets mad at me know that I am miserable and trying my best to do the right thing.

We live on a farm and we are neighbors to 2 other farms. One has chickens. Boots discovered them sometime back but he had not killed any. Recently he began to find ways to escape and kill them. He has killed a lot. I have locked him up as well as chaining him which I totally dont like to do. We have worked on this for months. He is a farm dog and farm dogs roll in the mud and play with kids and watch the grounds. When the neighbors caught boots at it they decided to warn us that he would get shot or poisoned if it happened again. I am beside myself. I am in the process of trying to find him an appropriate non chicken home. Fisher never tries this. I feel so bad cause I adore my dog but I dont want anything to happen to him. I watch him like a hawk and never let him have any freedom without me in arms length but it is no way for him to live! If you have any ideas of who might love him and appreciate him that I could trust please let me know. I want him to have a loving home with a fenced yard and someone who will love him and play with him. He is an awesome dog he just loves chicken nuggets! I feel like a crappy owner. Please let me know if you know anyone close to Lewisburg, TN.

Thanks and again I already know I suck as a dog owner so please dont yell at me. I feel crappy enough.

these kind of things happen. I don't feel like you are a bad dog owner, you have tried everything you can think of (and I can't think of anything else you can do, either) and nothing is working. it's going to hurt you even more when you let him go if you are beating yourself up over this. good luck.

I am so sorry to hear about your situation. I know this must be tough on you. However, you are thinking with your heart when it comes to the dog and trying to do the right thing for him. I know this is not easy for you. I hope you can find a better situation for him or figure out an alternative....thinking of you at this difficult time....I know I would be beside myself too....

I think you are doing the right thing by trying to find him a home. If I was closer I would take him. Washington State here. I'd love to have him. Please don't let him get out.

I think what you are doing is in the best interest of Boots. I think it is very hard and honorable decision putting his needs before yours.

Just a few questions so as to know how to best offer advice and options.

Is fencing an area off an option for you?

Have you contacted his breeder about helping in re-homing him or perhaps he/she will take him back? That's just what Breeders do.

Where is Lewisburg? I know rescue contacts in eastern, middle and even out Memphis way.

There are fences but since they are for horses he can find his way through plus the stupid chickens come over. we got another pen but I just hated it because his brother got to play and run as well as our other farm dogs being out and free. I just dont think it is fair or good for him to be "grounded" when he is being a puppy with a chicken adiction. (not to make light of it but he is sooo sweet about all of it. It is like he doesnt get it.)
Breeder wasnt an option. I am not sure what happened to her.
A lady at work whose daughter lost her dog is soooooo excited to try him out she wants to see him tomorrow! She has had dogs before and knows about puppy issues so it ought to be great! I hope everything pans out but I will let you know how it goes.

If there is fencing already then why not plug the gaps with wire netting to make it Corgi safe?
I am currently looking after a Pem named Alice who would gladly kill and eat a chicken. Otherwise she is a typically sweet female Corgi.

I am so sorry for your situation with your little boy. I remember we had discussed the chicken issue before. Sometimes, people have no other option but to rehome their pet and it is so hard but you have to put the pet before your own feelings and do what is best for your pet and you are doing just that.

Michael - With horse wire you can't just plug the holes, it doesn't work that way. The squares in the fence are large enough at the bottom so they wiggle right through and if there is any kind of acreage at all, it would be impossible to do that. Even to purchase the electric fencing or invisible fence is a major task to take to lay it around the fence and if one blade of grass gets on the wire, it shorts it out or if a minor break in the wire, again shorted out. I even bought the wireless fence and paid well over $350 for the system and it covered 1/2 acre and that didn't work for either.

Hope everything works out well for you and Boots.
