URGENT: Needs a new home or he will be euthanized - 03-09-2008, 12:44 PM

I have a Corgi named Tucker. He is red and white, purebred, 5 1/2 years old. We got him in 2003.

He has IVDD which I am sure you know about. At the moment his condition is good, he is not paralyzed, he can hold his bowels and bladder (boy, can he ever!) and he is not in severe pain. His discs are not calcified. His first flare up was in Nov. 2007, which was when we were in the middle of moving from AZ to PA. His second one was near the end of February, only 4 months from the first.

He has never been a pack dog really, and we have 2 other dogs. Never really liked the hustle and bustle of our family either. But now with his disease, it's clear he cannot stay here. He is grumpy and is attacking one of our dogs if he comes near him for more than a minute or two. He has attacked him three times in 2 days. That, and we live in a 3 story house and 2 1/2 acres. He could easily hurt himself by running up/down stairs. Right now he is living in our basement/downstairs entertainment room because he is attacking our other dogs.

We are getting two puppies next Monday so we really need to make a decision for him. Even if we weren't getting the puppies, we would need to do this anyways because he is attacking the other dogs. My parents are going to put him to sleep if I cannot find a caring home for him, and that really scares me.

He is in good health otherwise. Heart, lungs, kidneys and liver all good. He needs a home without other dogs OR an old dog who will NOT bother him. He lives with a cat, he has also lived with our many guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and birds and ignores them. Older, mature kids are good with him. He cannot have a house with stairs, OR he will need someone who is willing to gate off the stairs so he cannot go up or down.

Our living situation does not allow him a happy life like he should have. We are willing to pay for surgery DIRECTLY to a veterinarian, not out of pocket. We live near Exton, PA and willing to travel to DE, MD, anywhere in PA, NJ. If anyone is outside of those states we are willing to work something out, but we would prefer he doesn't have to fly all the way across the country!

I hope someone here can find him a home. His photo is here: http://i27.tinypic.com/iyzvpf.png

I'll say prayers for you to find Tucker a new home. There is too much hustle and bustle here at our house with two dogs and a cat. The corgi mix I have isn't too keen on strange dogs in her area, either. She tolerates Duncan because he was here first when we got her.

Have you contacted the nearest corgi group in your area? There may be a breeder or another owner of corgi who may be willing to help you.

Good luck!

You need to contact Sue Geiger with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Potomac rescue program:

I don't mean to come off the wrong way, but is there a reason that surgery has not been done on him already? I am not super familiar with IVDD, but are they able to climb stairs after they heal from the surgery? I thought I had read that once aware that the dog has this, it was important to have surgery as soon as possible?

And once healed and feeling better, would he be less grumpy and quit attacking the other dogs? I guess this is the main question I have?

I guess I don't understand the bringing in new puppies next week when your family has this dog that needs medical help; what would your parents do to your other two dogs and the new arrivals if they are not able to handle stairs in the future?

It is a difficult situation to understand, but at this point surgery may not even be necessary as I have been told. I have been told that surgery can be avoided or postponed by several months by lots of rest and restricted activity. At this point our lives are hectic and we think it may be better if he goes to his new home, and then we will pay his new vet directly for the surgery. He will then be able to recover in a quiet environment without other dogs.

I have gotten two responses from Corgi rescue. One of them agrees it would be best for him to stay with us until he goes to his new home rather than be bounced from our house to a foster to his new house. The other person says he must be put into a foster home and we would sign him over.

You are right I don't know you or your home life, so I don't understand, but if things are hectic now, why is your family then getting two new puppies?

At least you are willing to pay his medical bills. I know what I would do, but from your story, I am sure my suggestion would not even be an option based on your parents wanting to euthanize him if he is not found a home.

So good luck to you and I wish the best for this Corgi that he finds a forever home that will take care of him. I hope your other dogs stay healthy.

So, why are you not willing to use baby gates to quarantine him? I use two baby gates to keep mine in the quarters I want him in when I'm away. I have a two story house and if I wanted to put another up to keep him from the downstairs it would be an easy matter.

What do you mean your "living situation does not allow him a happy life like he should have"? Do the cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and birds deserve a better life? I think you're right in re-homing him. He doesn't deserve you. The sooner he finds a better home the happier he will be.

David, the decision to put him down is the parents decison. This person (the daughter) is hoping to find her dog a home so that won't happen. It doesn't help to chew her out the choices aren't hers to make. She's just hoping to help her dog.

I'm hoping she will contact rescue and put him in foster care.

Peggy

Oh wow, congratulations on making assumptions and not reading my posts correctly. Does ratting me out make you feel high and mighty? Please get a hobby. You're welcome to come over here and figure out what to do with him, just email me and we can plan something. After all, you must be at something if you feel like chewing at me like this.

Tucker does not live with hamsters, rats or guinea pigs anymore. We have a chairlift for my mom and it is impossible to put a gate up. The railing of the chairlift ends at the bottom of the stairs. At the moment we are using the bottom half of a crate to block the stairs.

I've gotten in touch with a rescuer and I hope everything goes well.

Miranda,

Which choice do your parents want to go with?
