Corgis in numbers - 01-22-2007, 12:48 AM

All (other) dogs in numbers are called "packs." But where there are three or more Pembroke and/or Cardigan Corgis together, there is a special terminology that can be used:

A CREW OF CORGIS

Being as stubborn as corgis can be, you know, I don't know why we need a special word. I call my guys by numberous things, gang, herd, kids, dogs, or on a not so good day, brats, and yes sometimes worse.

And corgis are dogs so IMO pack is still the correct term.

We don't need an "official" word and I'm sure that somewhere along the line someone has used crew at times too.

JMO.

Peggy - someone back in history plucked 'pack' out of the blue and applied it to dogs, to cards, to lies but not to elephants and dolphins and trees. All we are doing in 2007 is virtually the same. Hope it takes off. Corgis are different so they deserve a different slant.

Here's to your crew.

Michael,

I guess I'll have to be the one to burst your bubble of having come up with a novel description for multiple corgis. Let me try to do this gently as possible - a crew of corgis and/or corgi crew has been used for years by someone in Florida to refer to her multiple corgis. She is a member of the Sunshine Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club and very active in their rescue program - has been for years. She's not the only one to have used this reference/description either. I suppose being so new to the international internet world of corgis there is a lot of catching up to do.

Debbie - it doesn't phase me in the least. "Crew' happened to be the most favoured alternative name on Go Corgi from around 20. So all I did was declare it as a useable reference and see what happens from there. I'm just pleased it didn't turn out to be that corny word. Well done Florida.

The question remains though, why does it need to be declared as a useable reference? There are plenty of creative minds in the international internet corgi community and many, many of them have come up with all kinds of creative terms to refer to their multiple corgis and they didn't need anyone's permission or a vote to have their term declared as "useable." IF you were looking for input for suggestions to use for your corgi walking group, fine that would be one thing (although <IMHO> the members of the walking group should have been the first to be consulted and asked for input). I still see the overestimation of the significance, power and influence this particular forum has on the corgi community at large. It has none. Why Go Corgi can't be celebrated and enjoyed for the exchange of information, stories, friendships formed and the shared love of the breed(s) that it is, I don't understand.

And IF there were more exposure to the dog world at large, I think it would be found that those in other breeds hold the same view of uniqueness about their breeds and go to the same lengths to celebrate their love and devotion to them.

Debbie

And well cornucopia of corgis might be the most accurate of the terms to describe my crowd. I have both breeds in a wide variety of sizes and colors - like a Thanksgiving cornucopia.

Michael I don't have a crew. I have a pack. Or whatever I choose to call them on any given day.

Why reinvent the wheel? Corgis are special yes, but they are still DOGS!

I still don't see why YOU get to decide that we need a new word for a group of corgis. Sorry, but that seems rather elitest to me. And I know you had a poll but out of the 100+ people on this forum, not many voted so it seems to me that most don't think we need a new word.

Ah Peggy. Corgis are not dogs. They are ........ well, Corgis.
Where you see a sign saying NO DOGS and you have a Corgi or a crew of Corgis, ignore the sign.

Members who don't vote on Go Corgi have at least had the opportunity.

Do that in the US and you'll most likely get yourself kicked out of where ever. Or they'll call the cops and you'll have a ticket and/or a visit from animal control.

I love my corgis and yes, I think they are special but they are DOGS!

True, and IMO, if they had thought there was really a need or it was important then they would have voted. That there was such a small response tells me that it wasn't important.

Peggy - you don't get the big picture - every response on Go Corgi has been small (that's the way it is, I expect nothing else)- tell members that we are not important.

Corgis are not dogs. I will not be influenced by you on that one. Maybe we should have a vote on it.

Don't need a vote. They are dogs. They attend dog shows, dog training schools, etc.

And I very well get the big picture. I didn't say the members of this list weren't important, where did you get that idea?

I just said you don't need to reinvent the wheel. You only have one corgi right? So why do YOU need a word for multiples? I've lived with more than that since the end of 1980. Trust me they are dogs first and foremost. Special dogs yes, but DOGS.

Every owner of any breed thinks their breed is special. If that were not so there would not be so many breeds. And it should be that way.

I agree with Michael on this one. From what I have seen about Corgis, they are in the class all by themselves! Somewhere between dogs and people.
I am sorry but while Lord is a dog Lola is just so much more than just a dog to me. Lord is considered somewhat my son's sibling, but Lola is the favorite in the family period. Also Lola does not get treated as a dog by anyone, more like a four legged human.
