Just keeping track of prices here! - 12-08-2007, 01:25 PM

Microchip and registration (Ponder)- 16 dollars
Vaccinations- see below*
Neutering- see below*
Petco dog bed- 13 dollars
Petco dental kong- 9 dollars
Petco pooch pleasers county squirrel- 5 dollars
Petfood- Depends
Doggie toothpaste- 4 dollars
Collar- 6 dollars
Leash- 5 dollars
Nylabone Organic Vida Puppy Treats- 5 dollars
Mesh Muzzle- 5 dollars
Blankie- Use towel
Crate- Borrow from Janna
Car Harness- 6 dollars
Stainless steel bowls- 10 dollars
Petco Tag Reflector- 3 dollars

That's 102 dollars for supplies.

*In Ponder* Surgery, hospitalization for one night, vaccinations, heartworm test, one dose of
heartworm preventative, deworming for hookworms and roundworms, flea and tick treatment,
presurgical pain medication, check up and suture removal two weeks after surgery = 115

As for food, it depends on the brand of food. Because of all the puppy food wars going on,
I find it hard to decide. I will probably talk to the vet and breeder. I'll also consult
Peggy and/or the feeding section of the forums on gocorgi.com. It's probably one 20 pound
bag for 2 months or something. That's about 25 dollars every two months. Not too bad.

And finally, for the honorary pup himself. This, again, depends on different factors.
I know that I would love any color over none, but I really do want a red headed tri-color
or fawn colored pup. Now, well bred pups around here are usually anywhere from 300 to 600
dollars. Yikes. I have until June though, so I think I can do it! I am pretty much set on a herradura andalusion pup. Their males are 350 and can be taken home in June!

This'll be steep! But it's worth it.

So... 350 for the puppy, and 102 for supplies, and 115 for vaccines and neutering, which is
568. Then, food every so often. I think I can do it. I KNOW I CAN!

That's 143 dollars for supplies.
You need to add in a water bowl and a food bowl. And your puppy won't need a sweater. It will be outgrown very quickly. The same with a collar, they out grow them very quickly. For a puppy I buy flat nylon buckle collars, cheap ones becase they are outgrown VERy quickly. You can get a more permant collar as the puppy approaches 6 mos. of age.

A mesh muzzle is probably not needed either.

Now, for vaccination costs. I will probably contact Dr. Wenschi (spelling?)about it, as well as the breeder. This information will have to wait.

Considering that Imus's (my aunt's dog's) breeder only sells black headed tri-colors, (not to mention is very low par) I will probably end up saving up for a different breeder.
Not that there is anything wrong with Imus yet! I just don't want to take any chances.

Well, bred puppies from reputable breeders are more like $800-900. In some areas, $600 would be the low end. Remember reputable breeders do health tests and sell pet puppies on limited registrations, they ask YOU questions, and they use contracts.

You mom saying yes is the biggest hurdle.

Well, I assumed that I could just use ordinary bowls for food and water, unless there is a specific reason that I am missing for buying them.

As for the sweater, I was going to wait until he was grown to buy it. I just want something for him to have if I'm going to be gone for a few hours and it's cold.

I have never seen puppies that are 800-900. Most that I see are 300-500, 600 at the most. Besides, I don't think that there's anyway I could make 800-900. I have 285 as of now.

And about my mother saying yes... Well, I overheard her telling my father (don't know him really) over the phone that I want a dog really badly and that I'm working hard for one. She also told the people I'm babysitting for money for that I am doing it for a dog... I just have a feeling that she wouldn't go spreading it around if she just planned to say no and drop the whole thing.

Freppan....sounds like your mother is caving in!!! Keep up the good work! As for a sweater.....if your house is warm enough for you, I don't see a need for a sweater in the house, if that is what you mean. I think the dog will be quite comfortable. Don't forget, these dogs were bred for outside, so they can stand it a little cool. And, seeing how you live in Texas, just how cold does it get for a length of time? I would think you may want to add a baby pool for the summer.

Yes, I think that she might be. Ohhhh, I hope I hope I hope I hope!

The sweater thing is for outside. What about when I'm at school in the winter? I would like for him to have some extra warmth... unless you really think that it's unecessary?

It doesn't matter that I live in Texas, winters are still very cold. The only difference about Texas is that it rarely snows and that the summers are freaking hot. Sometimes it is in the thirties (F), but it rarely drops below that except during nights in January. It has snowed before, but it rarely happens, and when it does, it usually isn't much.

I think you can skip the sweater, and (like Lou Ann wrote) replace that item with a baby swimming/wading pool for summer. I know Denton gets a little colder than Austin (where we are) but not too much. You can get a sweater later if you just want the "cute" factor.

There do seem to be more breeders in the Denton area than here. I had a hard time finding any breeders within 60 miles and was starting to look into driving to Dallas or Houston. $600.00 was the bottom end here for a pet quality dog (mostly horse ranch dogs). The show breeders here wanted $800 for pet quality and $1200 and up for show quality.

All the breeders in my area that I have contacted have been about 300-500. How odd! Maybe I'm just lucky.

My aunt got her little Imus for only 100 dollars. He turned out to be absolutely great in herding, and is mostly show quality except for his tail, which is a tad too long. I don't plan to go there though, because for only 100 dollars, there is probably no health guarantee. Besides, the place was very trashy, said my aunt.

Anyway, I might skip the sweater unless I just want it for looks later on. I will consider a kiddie pool though. That's probably a good idea.

Well given that your Mother isn't most exuberant about this idea to begin with, I don't think she'll appreciate you using any of her bowls to feed and water the dog. Secondly, don't use plastic as they can develop an allergy to it and cause loss of pigment and skin issues in some dogs, so leftover plastic dishes are not a good idea. Skip the sweater and spend that money on a couple of stainless steel bowls.

$800-$1,000 is going rate on the east coast. Different parts of the country prices will vary some, but $600 is VERY low end in most parts of the US.

As for the sweater, if you are keeping the puppy inside, then there is no need for a sweater and especially if it is around summer when you get it. By the time winter rolls around again, then the puppy will have outgrown it anyway.

No, just gives us an idea of the breeders you've been contacting. Horsey breeders, high volume internet fronts, etc.

For a $100, probably more than just the tail being a tad too long when put up against the standard.

Sounds like you're getting closer...i know when we looked, through petfinder/next day pets and such, we saw some pups for low prices but most rep. breeders around us in NH/New England surrounding are 900+...we paid 1200 for Colb and he was cheapers cuz hes a fluff...their regualr pems are 1400 but i was THRILLED with our breeder and her dogs and all the feedback we got from others who have bought from her...it was worth every cent to us...here's sending you "mom-misson wishin'" this holiday season!! i really hope this works out for you as you sound very determined and im sure you'll make a great corgi-mum whenever the time comes!!

Thanks for reading, guys. Colbycorgi, thank you for your kind words!

Glencorgi, what is wrong with horse and corgi breeders? Is there something I should know that is wrong with them?
