We have a pet store a few towns over from us that sells puppies. They dont keep the puppies in cages, they throw them into large glass rooms by general size and they "claim" that they dont come from puppy mills but private breeders ,and put the name of the breeder on the card for each puppy for the public to see ( posted on the glass walls of the enclosure.)
What i found disturbing ( aside from their prices, which are rediculously high) is that i would look at the names and there would be only a hand full of different breeder names and most of the breeders bred about 10 different breeds and their names are constantly there on the walls- so they have litters of dogs there all the time year round. To me, that would be a puppy mill situation. They are not quality dogs. I did notice that you rarely if ever see pembrokes there ( and never once a cardi). However, I did see a pembroke there about 5 months ago ( after which point i refused to ever go back there - only going there to find a difficult to find food, which i later founds elsewhere). This puppy was mismarked, he was too tall, not long enough, ears were set incorrectly and too small, his tail was docked incorrectly and he had a long stub. His face wasn't shaped right. The kicker? He cost a little more than what i paid for my Dillon from a very reputable breeder and for a dog that could have been a show dog ( if it weren't for his undescended testicle, but conformation - he is lovely).
This same store also sells the mixed breed dogs- example a puggle ( pug beagle mix) and matipoo (maltese poodle cross) and they charge over $1,000 dollars for these mixed breed dogs...I am absolutely offended by this- if you want to spend $1,000 for a mixed breed dog, go resuce one from the pound that is in danger of being euthanized ,for $60 and donate the other $940 to an animal charity! Oh this has hit my hot button...
sorry for the rant...I do feel better now if that is any consolation
