Will this problem go away??? - 10-26-2006, 02:13 AM

Apollo, my little boy, tends to pee on himself since he is so short. He's almost 7 months old, so he's not fully grown I guess, but will he be able to lift his leg higher instead of peeing on his front leg? I mean he doesn't pee on himself, but he tends to miss the spot he is aiming for and it leaks on the concrete and on to him...

Most Corgi males still tend to squat at seven months when weeing. That the urine dribbles down the concrete can easily be fixed- get him other places to toilet -preferably where there is areas of grass, dirt or weedy surfaces (where the urine won't create a stream), maybe close to trees and bush and posts - because that is where he'll head for in any case when he gets older.
Corgis do not like dabbling in their own wee or poop.

Buta is already 2 yrs old but everytime she pees, some of it will leak on the ground & onto her paws...she obviously hates it & rubs her legs on the grass after peeing. I don't think she can prevent the gravity from causing the pee to flow pass her legs....

I love love love love loooovvvvveeeee Corgis!!!
I have discovered Corgis ONLY expand SIDE WAYS.

Dillon has this issue too sometimes if the ground ( even in grass) is hard and the pee doesnt absorb in quickly. Every once in a while the stream will get his back foot- he also seems very grumpy about this. I use a nice wet papertowel to clean it off and then dry it off and he is much happier. I know he prefers trees, light posts, fire hydrants, anything that he can pee against and that doesnt puddle near that back standing leg...But at 7 months he will start lifing the leg soon and the problem should happen less.

One problem is, Apollo doesn't seem to mind or even care if he pees on himself... and he gets really stinky when he does too... I hate it... it's getting annoying.

Have them pee uphill.

I'm kind of kidding!

I used to run a lot on rural country roads that were sloped along the shoulder (the shoulders of the road were not flat). SO when I ran I was always putting pressure on the knee of the outside leg.

One day after lots of pain I went to my orthopedic surgeon. He asked me where I ran and I told him. He said turn around and run the other direction.

So I would put pressure on the opposite leg from the sloped road.

$75 please!

I don't quite understand this, Cody does not pee on himself and I am not sure why Apollo seems to be doing this.

Fargo does this a bit, but it's not his fault. He lifts his leg and arches his back as if he were pushing it out when he goes potty. Well since he is arching his back, he is aiming it more forward which usually ends up on the back of his right paw. I try to wipe it off before he can sit and lick at it. But there's not much I can do about this situation!! haha.

hmmm . . . maybe we need to start a "mentoring program" for dogs to learn how to lift their legs.

This is a puzzling problem. I wish I had something more helpful to suggest.

Rupe whips his leg up so high he nearly flips himself over - and Susan he has rolled down a hill when he hasn't quite anticipated the physics of the situation. No matter how high he raises that poor leg he almost always puts it down down in the puddle - unless he's peed on something vertical. Boys, yuck!

Jespa - I've never had that problem with any of my boy Corgis. It's to do with natural balance I would have thought - but maybe his technique is just a bit screwy.

Well I'm hoping that he'll grow out of it as he grows into his adult stages.

Or else maybe I should start running him to strengthen his leg muscles.

That's almost certainly the answer. His leg muscles are not as strong as they should be. To really strengthen a Corgis leg muscles they need hill work. My Taylor gets a hill workout at least once a week for agility competition.

The other thing might be a lack of calcuim which greatly strengthens muscles and bones.
