Inappropriate peeing.... - 11-05-2006, 07:19 PM

Milo is housetrained, never has accidents. However, lately I noticed that when we go to a friend or relatives home, a pet store, anywhere there are other dogs, in other words, i've caught him lifting his leg. I say his name in my stern mommy voice and that stops him. However, this is new behavior at 4 years of age. Does anyone have advice on how to correct this?
He did manage a piddle on my friends new hardwood floor!! They have a Golden. He only does this where there are other dogs. I think it is weird that he only started doing this at 4 years old. I always make sure that before we go into a home or store, he gets the chance to potty, so what do you think this is about?

Sometimes dogs will find certain places irresistable. One of my sisters had 10 kids and when they were all very young there were certain smells in her lounge due to nappies and in a place or two, the lingering smell only discernable to a dog, which was the result of a baby 'error.' So my Corgi on one occasion lifted his leg and a small wetness appeared on the wallpaper. The answer to a dog which does this sort of thing more than once, is to admonish the culpruit in the act or just before the final unwanted action ie as soon as he has raised a leg. I'm sure a well house trained dog will take notice - if not the first time, certainly by the second or third.. You may have to put on his leash before he comes inside the homes of your friends etc.

It sounds like he's marking. Just like outside, if he's in another territory or his own, he is letting the other dogs know he was there. As, you maybe aware from your walks with him, it's not that he has to go, it's that he wants to make his mark. I know Rupert will do his thing all over the neighbourhood, and even lift his leg and "go through the motions" when he's empty.

Hi,
I agree with Jespah, it sure looks like he is leaving the mark to let everyone know that he was there.
My dogs re-mark the yard all the yard from each other and other dogs all the time. Sometimes I get annoyed when I am in hurry and they are supposed to be taking care of business, but instead they are trying to out mark each other.

It reminds me of the time I took Digger to my brothers house at Christmas time. He had a real christmas tree and Digger walked right over and lifted his leg on that tree. I was so embarrassed. But to a dog a tree is a tree I guess. Just had to share this.

I have always been mortified when Zip does something like that. He has hiked his leg on my mom's couch before when she's kept him for us. One time he hiked his leg on my sister's newly painted wall and my niece's crayons. When we are at the lake, I don't think there is a rock, stick, blade of grass, etc. that he hasn't peed on.

Tuck does this too and it makes me crazy. He hasn't had an accident in my house in well over a year. First Christmas here I walked a baby present to the neighbors at Christmas. They love Tuck so I brought him along. I put the present down by their tree, he walked over and lifted his leg.

Just this morning he was out on the frozen lake informing the ice fishermen that he knew better than they did how to catch fish. One man had one of those very expensive fishing baskets. He walked up and lifted his leg. Fortunately, they have a Golden, know the drill, and as they saw it (along w/ me) we all yelled in unison "NOOOOOOO!". Well, with 3 people yelling, we managed to nip it in the bud.

Of course there was his shining moment in the show ring for his 1st Rally Obedience Trial: Lifted his leg on the cone 2 steps into the ring (no way dod he really have to go!).

Annoying! Man, girls are looking better all the time! Lulu never does this.

hee hee hee Until you get a girl that can mark as proficiently as any male ever thought about doing and better yet, one that will do it to set up the boys.

I agree with Debbie- my shepherd is way more accurate with her marking than Sam is- neither of them in the house- but Kate can lift her leg pretty high, and poor sam can't reach.....

My daughter's chow goes around and pees everywhere Chip pees and she lifts her leg too.

After reading all this, I think when I start looking again I'll have to stay with a female! I figured that all along. Manners and discretion are somewhat better than males.

At 9 months, I've never seen Lulu try to lift her leg! I'll keep an eye out!

I agree with Debbie, Amanda and Bonnie. Some girls can be just as bad as boys. lol
For example Lord (rottweiler) can mark higher, but Lola (corgi) can mark more places. Lord might have a bigger bladder, but she "rations" her pee so that by time Lord runs completely dry she is still going and going and going.................... lol
