Corgi's with change -
11-07-2006, 12:29 AM
I am not sure if this is just a problem of Sassy's or all Corgi's. I have started changing my furniture around and placing some Christmas decorations around as our family has Thanksgiving/Christmas with my mother's entire extended family so I decorate early but Sassy is not a happy camper. She is scared of some of the things I have done. She will not walk on the throw rugs I have on the floor and she barks at the yard decorations. I had to move her chair from the window as that is where my Christmas tree goes and now she stands on her hind legs and tries to see out the window. I am going to place another chair at another window for her but I am not sure this is going to appease her. She REALLY does not like change. Does anyone else have this problem?

I definately has this problem. Miss Gambler will notice if I move any piece of furniture just as soon as she enters the room, then she will crouch and walk in low, sometimes growling and barking. It can be quite funny, and I never make anything of it, else, I will end up having to move things back just to appease her. She gets used to it. As for Christmas, She only gets used to all that by the time it all has to come down, and she has Christmas in two places so the problems are two-fold. Just don't act like it's a big deal, and do not give in and move things back.

The Girls don't seem to mind when I move furniture. But if something looks completely out of place - like an errant plastic bag threatening their food bowls - then they are like Missy Gambler! Crouching down, big bad growls, they band together and go in like Marines! Then when they realize it's nothing, looking a little embarrassed LOL I really think it's cute how when "danger" is near or if there is a strange animal (squirrel or cat) in the yard they move together side by side to investigate!

Jackie's pretty goodwith the changing of the decorations for Christmas (or she was last year, anyway . . .). But whenever she shows apprehension or fear of anything silly like that, I put her on leash and we go over to investigate the offending object together (not too close at first). Nice & calm, like it's no big deal (which it's not). We work our way up to it, treating at regular intervals as long as she remains calm. Then, when we are done and she is off-leash, I put a few treats right next to / around whatever it is and leave them there for her to investigate and discover on her own. This way she has some positive associations, instead of just fear and mistrust.
Maybe you could do this with the throw rugs & the "lookout" chair when you find a new place for it? Show her the new lookout post & give treats when she gets up to look out the window, so she knows this is her new perch?

We just renovated and made big changes to the place. Milo was not fearful at all or scared with the "new" surroundings. But, we did take him away when they were painting and banging on stuff so he won't hear the noise.
Try to pinpoint what exactly is causing your corgi to be scared. Slowly and surely assure them not to be afraid.
Maybe someone with more experience in this can help you. Good luck!

Well we sort of conquered the throw rug problem. I took up the ones that were in her usual path from the living room to my office and replaced her old piece of carpet and all seems to be back in harmony. The throw rugs are still down but she does not have to step on them to get where she wants to go. We are now trying to get her used to the outdoor decorations as they move and some are big. We have an 8 foot carousel and an 8 foot igloo that santa and a snowman come in and out of. She does fine with them during the day but at night she barks at them, and it is a menacing bark too. Really quite funny. But all is back happy in the house with her piece of carpet back.

Maybe Sassy is a closet interior decorator and liked the style of the old rug better - more ambiance (or some other big word lol) and it set the mood for the whole house...

Dillon was great with the christmas tree and decorations last year- however I took no chances, had the christmas tree in the front room and dillon was gated out of that room- he was not afraid of it- and on christmas morning, we got together to open presents, and we would hand him is presents and help him unwrap them ( he got the idea by the last few that he could rip off the paper) and then he would take the fun toy, and run into the living room ( one room over from the front room) and put them next to his toy box and run back to us and the tree to get another present. He was so adorable, my only regret was not recording it...then after we were done, he played for hours with all his new great toys! This year he was so good, santa will be bringing another truck load of gifts for this pup...LOL!
