why does my corgi love to stink?

title pretty much says it all.... he will grind, roll, sit, and stomp his way to become stink dog..... things you would never even see on a walk he finds..... truly a stench magnet.... anyone know why he does it? my first thoughts were maybe like some old inherited trait to try to cover his own smell.... but doesn't really seem like something a herding dog would need to do, but i am no expert..... it's not really a problem.... just stinky

That pretty much answers your question.

The better to sneak up on stock with my dear. And just remember Chanel #5 might smell like sheep poop to a corgi.

Debbie

Some Corgis will look for something revoltingly(to most of us humans) smelly to roll around in or at least snuggle their necks in to, while others will be a lot more dignified in their approach. Thankfully with my present Corgi he fits into the latter category. I have never seen a dog roll in other dogs poop but sheep, cows, horses etc poop are sometimes irrestible as is squashed and decaying hedgehogs and birds.

it doesnt really bother me because he looks like he's having the time of his life.... worst part is washing it off.... the warm water makes for a great stinky steam facial.... P U..... the top worst smells he has found were a bag of rotting garbage and a large pile of crushed shells for a driveway(that had the most discusting black goo i can only assume were once clams)

as for herding, i know nothing aside from..... dog move livestock
i never considered a sneaky factor...

Hate to say it, it's NOT just corgi dogs. I can remember my whole life having dogs rolling in poop, dead fish, rotting compost ext. ext. And yes, the worst part is washing it out PEEEEWWWWEEE! hehehe

My vet tells me it's because the dog likes the smell. I can't imagine why poop or dead fish smells good but my nose isn't wired like my dog either. LOL

I would think that, with those super-sensitive noses, there must be components to the smells that are wonderful to the dogs...maybe it's like wine - "I smell hints of oak, chocolate, and cherry..."

Aw, heck...it's probably just the stinky parts they like.

Bear and gemjunkie - what cute little pups you have!

I think dogs must like to smell stinky. Sometimes Milo sniffs his own farts, wrinkles his nose and tries to run away from his butt. So why that offends him but dead critters and bunny poop seems delectable enough to roll around in...mystifies me!

Milo's Mom - I've seen a dog sniff its own farts, but never sniff them and RUN! That's hilarious!

The 'best' scent that Montrose ever disguised herself in was a decaying salmon carcass as we walked along the river.

Dylan, deer poop in the woods, and we were camping in our travel trailer, during a rain storm.

I 've always agreed with that theory Debbie, but the thought of a salmon in the stockpen always give me a laugh.

Now come on Barbara, how do you think the salmon get moving up stream?

Ok Debbie, how I have a vision of the salmon swimming in the Vedder River (down the rd from us and world famous for salmon) with a group of our Corgis, in their life vests no less, herding them along!

OMG!!! Although it is VERY true...I was trying so hard not to laugh aloud at Milosmom as I am at work. That took a great act of self reserve let me tell ya!!! And YES I have seen it done before! My MilkDud (passed away a year ago) used to do that ALL the time. Smell his own farts and then try to run away from them!! LOL!! Then he would stop at the other end of the room and check himself again to see if it followed him!! And get this....if there was a little bit of odor lingering, you guessed it....he would walk farther away!!! OMG I am about to wet myself trying to keep from laughing!!!
