Normally, my dogs would be allowed to dig while out on hikes, at the dog park, etc. But I have yet to find a place like that here (either way they were never allowed to dig in the yard). It is a natural instinct for a dog to dig and it doesn't seem to me that corgis are any different in that respect.
I'm thinking mine is digging because he hasn't quite realized that this is our yard now. >-.-;< Last edited by Cheetah; 11-13-2006 at 05:14 PM. |

Digger was a corgi mix and he loved to dig (thus the name) anyway, we would get a truckload of clean sand every spring and put it in a pile in our backyard. Kept him busy all summer and away from other less favorable spots to dig.

Chip'sMom: Maybe you just invented something, a doggie sandbox, and by using clean builder's sand, they don't get dirty, and it could have one of those covers on it that the ones for kids have to keep it clean and dry when not being used. Just a thought.

Digger would have loved that. My grandchildren used to get on the pile with him and they all would dig. LOL

I like the sandbox idea! Then when they get caught digging in inappropriate areas, they can be redirected to the sandbox. Same concept as potty training!

The only potential problem might be having neighbors who allow their cats to wander outside, and well, they might see all that sand as the biggest litter box they ever saw! Then the pups will be digging for "kitty cookies" ewwww

hmmmmmm . . . good point! Maybe you could get one of those "Zen Garden" rakes to clean out the kitty cookies. Then it's a dual purpose sand box (tri-purpose if you count what the cats use it for)!!

Rupe's my digger although Riley enjoyed it too. When I rent a cottage evry summer I make sure it has a beach as he spends the whole week digging holes in the beach and then laying in them.
Jemma has been trying to down to a chipmunk in it's tunnel in the school yard every morning. She has the enthusiasm but her technique has her filling it in rather than making it bigger. So far other than eating "kitty cookies" the dogs don't dig in our litter box - I'm sure they'd love a big one outside to play in though!

I am happy to hear that Sassy is not the exception Corgi, but I do believe that Michael is right on part of Sassy's digging being boredom, because it I play ball for a couple of hours during the day she tends not to dig holes unless the ground she sees a mole moving then she is like a polar bear and jumps on top of where she thinks he is and pushes her nose as far as she can. Really quite hilarious.

I tell a lie. My Corgis have been known to dig holes other than for burying bones. When they go to the beach on a warm or hot day and are camped on dry sand for any length of time, they would dig down to cooler sand and lie in the result of their efforts.
