Getting your Corgi to do their business in the Winter - 02-16-2007, 06:54 PM

How do you folks out there - who live in snowy areas - get your Corgi's to do their business in the Winter.

Recently, in this part of NH, we got our first decent snowfall since we got Byron. About 8 Inches

He is not enjoying it - at least from the point of try to relieve himself.

I cleared out an area for him but he had a tough time picking out a spot. He woke me up 2:30 AM for me to take him out which he almost never does.

I expanded the area this evening in hopes it will suit him better. We'll see how that goes. Initially it looks good - he has used the expanded area twice.

Just looking for thoughts/Ideas...

We have a year round potty area for the dogs, so if it is rain sleet or snow, we just keep the area cleared and they know that is the place to go.

Now I'm not saying that the like when it turns wet and cold, but they do go there.

Hope that helps.

I have a penned area off the deck that Dillon uses, and we must shovel during a storm a few times so any and everytime he asks to go out he will be able to go..we actually shovel the whole penned area ( it is only about 8x10 ft.) I never let the snow get more than two inches in his pen or he doesnt feel comfortable going either. How deep is the snow in the cleared area? I would take him out to his area and if he goes give him lots of praise ( i do cookies too) maybe that will help...

I don't have any trouble with my boy but with my girl, who is actually much better now. We just keep going to the place she has gone before. We just went out for their bedtime tinkle and she walked into snow past her tummy, squatted and did her thing.

I was having trouble getting her to go where I wanted, so I took a shovel and took some of the snow she had tinkled on elsewhere and put it where I wanted her to go. She smelled it there, and now she goes there all the time.

You could try that.

We have a cement patio and I then shoveled some of the snow off the covered lawn area beyond that so he could go. It had been pretty deep. He does fine and with the cold, he seems to find his spots pretty quick.

Hi, We are lucky that we live in the country and have a fairly large fenced yard. Our dogs are out when we are doing chores and even checking for lambs etc. at night. Since we have six dogs, it doesn't take long before they have paths broken through snow drifts or they follow the trails we make walking and pulling toboggans. They are not to keen on going out in the rain, but it seems to help that we are going out to do chores, and they do not want to miss out on the fun. In the process they do their business.

Milo doesn't care one bit if there are 2" of snow or 20", he just goes out and does his business. As the snow melts he continues to specifically seek out the remaining snow patches to do his business upon. It's hysterical to watch him try to do #1 and #2 on a little tiny remaining snow patch. He sizes up the snow patch and backs up to it....funny!!!

I think it has to do in what season they are born. If they are pups and taught to go outside and their business in the snow - then they think that's what you do. Riley was the same as Milo - as the snow slowly disappeared she'd hold it until she could find a patch big enough to use! Jem is the opposite - I had some trouble at first as she didn't know where her grass went - but now she'll trundle out into snow deeper than her legs and squat!

Thanks for all the comments.

Expanding the area, exposing some leaves which he enjoys, is now working fine....
