Mine play really rough too. So did Riley with Rupert. It's knowing when things have escalated or are about too. If you are not used to having two or more dogs - it can be a bit scary figuring out when you should get in there with the whistle and call a time out! Jemma gives as good as she gets with Rupe, but sometimes they just notch it up a bit too much so I push them apart - they are usually fine with that and I haven't had to put them in separate zones yet.
We have to understand their body and facial languege - the scary faces can be pretty intimidating to us - but often it's all just part of the game. And yes, for a sweet little thing, Lulu does one of the best scary faces I've seen!

Deb:
You need to post a pic of that one. I would love to see sweet little Jemma's scary face. LOL

I guess I've been lucky. My two play fight all the time, and nothing serious has become of it. Duncan usually insitgates it with his WWF chest slam as I call it. He'll run up to Chloe and hit her with his chest and couple of times. This usually produces some growls and snaps from her, and then it turns into a mock fight. Then it's the frapping through the house. When Chloe has had enough, she usually gives a certain growl, and Duncan seems to understand, play time is over

My corgis have a large age difference. Reba is 13, Jesse is 1. Reba is laid back and just wants to veg out. She's not demanding in the least. Just give her food, water, and a place to lay and she's got all she needs. Jesse demands attention, including from Reba. He herds her, bitting her ears, back, and back feet. He'll come from behind and pounce on her. She'll stand it to a point then woof at him, give him a dirty look, and all out chase him around for awhile. I've yet to see her attack him back yet. Though when he wants to just love her (licking her ears, face, and snuggling up to her) she will let him, and she'll even kiss him back sometimes. I never seem to be able to grab the camera in time. When we first got him he would drive her crazy trying to mount her (til a bit after he got fixed), and she'd go out of her way to be as far away from him as she could, but now that he has mellowed out considerably, she lets him get close. She never initiates the contact though.

There were 10 Pems at the Wellington Welsh Corgi Walking Club's walk today and after the off-leash walk through the forest for 40 minutes, we picnic'd next to a swimming hole in the stream and the Corgis had a great time and not one inkling of a fight and only one, a 10 year old, displayed a mellow growl at the extra attention my Taylor was giving him. The ages ranged from five months to 10 years, only two girls yet they were absolutely well behaved and only Taylor didn't want to swim but was content with a paddle. We had communal fetching and there was lots of playfights and chasing around and some expectant moments with the Corgis interested in food.
By the way the five month old Corgi named Murphy footed it with the big guys all the way. I could take any of these Corgis home and they would easily co-exist with Taylor. Last edited by Michael Romanos; 03-12-2007 at 06:56 PM. |

Andy has a wicked little mean face!
She completely bears her teeth! She and Rhys get aggressive when playing, but I have not had to physically separate them. Usually a loud "hey" or "knock it off!" will get them to stop. I just worry about when they get to the point where they are loose in the house together - will they injure each other?
