I am a new member to this forum and also new to owning a Corgi. I have had her for about one year and got her from a very reputable breeder when she was 8 weeks old. She is a love and very afectionate with everyone and especially loves children. She goes everywhere with us. She loves camping and rides wonderfully, but her first camping trip was when she was 12 weeks old and we took her camping in the Smoky Mountains.
I am wondering though about wooing sounds. I have had people stop me in the local Lowes Home Improvement etc stores (where they allow us to put her in a shopping cart) and ask me if I have noticed her making "wooing" sounds as if trying to talk. I am not sure I know what they mean or if I am just missing this behavior. I know my Bassett used to make noises as if trying to talk but not sure if they mean that type of thing or if it is something else. Also my Corgi (Sassy 1 year old sable Pembroke) will sometimes sit back when we eat and will not beg, but if you look her way and she is looking she will immediately turn her head as if she had been scolded, we have never scolded her for begging (as she does not beg). I feel bad but my husband says she is doing that to get us to feed her, which she gets Science Diet food and treats as well as raw veggies. When you go to give her a treat sometimes she will back up from you till you call her and show her it is for her. If I had rescued her I would have thought she had been mistreated but we have had her since 8 weeks old. Could I be doing something wrong? |

THis is interesting.
Perhaps Sassy's wooing is an imitation of something she has heard. I think it's cute rather that anything meaningful. But I'll consult some experts and let you know the results. Her avoiding eye contact when obviously anxious for something offered to her at your mealtime, is her way of doing what she thinks you want from her - not to show "disrespect" by 'asking' for food or giving you a pleading glance/ lingering stare, which means the same. My Taylor always sits between my daughter and my wife at dinner time and waits patiently should something come his way. He'll stare at you as if it is herding time. But never make a sound or movement. Only on the odd occasion will he get something off the table. Any suitable leftovers go into his food bowl or is saved for him for the following day. When my youngest son is sitting alngside the breakfast bar and eating, Taylor thinks this is fair game to go into a begging mode. But this is just another manifestation of Taylor considering himself the equal of my son. Corgis are very sensitive and sometimes the slightest indication they get of their (human) mom or dad not happy with something or other, can affect their demeanour. Can anyone possibly tell me what would be a good start with agility for my Corgi. I am only wanting to do it for exercise not competition. She loves climbing and jumping but I have no clue what to buy to start her out or where to purchase these things either.

Some corgis are very "verbal" and vocal and can come up with all kinds of sounds to "communicate" with their people. Wooing sounds - some corgis do them, some don't. Arrrroooo is another sound some will make. Then you have those soft "growlers" - the ones when curled up next to you on the couch getting their tummy's rubbed and carrying on with soft low growls, which is like a cat purring. Some of the "growlers" "talk" at other times as well. A recent 5 year foster girl was a big "talker." In her crate she'd "grrrr" and "arrrr-woof" and just converse away. She would do the same if it was time to get the ball out or time to go outside. Some corgis are very quiet - but know the timing of a well placed, "authoritative" single "woof" should get their "point" across. One of my own girls is not a real talker, however she does know the power of the corgi eye and communicates with that.
Sassy might just not be a "talker" in that sense - some of the "verbal" ones I've had didn't woo, but did other vocalizations. It is certainly nothing to worry about from a health or happiness standpoint if she isn't one that woo's. As for how to begin in agility, check with some of the local training clubs and sign up for a beginning class. You can learn the basics there and how to train safely and correctly. I can locate a website that has instructions for building your own obstacles if you'd like. Many of the performance (agility) folks scout ToysRUs for tunnels and things. Someone just mentioned on the Performance Corgis list they'd found some tunnels at their local Target. You can put Agility Obstacles or Equipment into Google and find a lot of sources - many of them rather pricey - but on those you're usually looking at regulation type equipment. Folks in a local agility training facility will likely also be able to give you suggestions to help you build a fun course for Sassy. Debbie |

*~* Hello...!!! I have two 6 month old Pembroke Corgi sisters. Their names are: Midnight & Sunshine. Midnight makes this sound, "Ba-wooooo" when she barks. I haven't really ever heard Midnight bark ! She just kinda has her own unique style. So....YES, in my home I have a Corgi that "Ba-wooooo" 's. Sunshine is a quiet girl. She only barks at the Bulldogs who live at the house behind ours. There are 2 bulldogs. The female likes to stick her paw in between the fence...so that Midnight & Sunshine can lick it to death ! ( We have a shadow box style of fence ). " Ba-wooooo "....or...." Roo...rooo...roo...rooo " are the common ways that Midnight communicates ! In the morning...Sunshine make a low soft "woof" when she knows that I am getting her food ready. *~* Nikki

Hi Bajoiner
A wooing Corgi can mean a few things. It depends on the circumstances when and where the Corgi woos. Generally speaking their are three interpretations. One is wooing from excitement and happiness, the second is wooing as direct means of talking and the other is wooing from anxiety. I think the first two applies to your Sassy. She is talking to the people around her through the excitement of the occasion. Don't discourage her. It's a talent! |

Nikki,
Our Emma is also a "soft talker". Usually she only has a low soft whisper of a woof when she has to remind me she wants to go out. The baby Chloe is another story! She is a "loud talker" and has a deep big girl voice LOL. We are trying to encourge her to use her "indoor voice" like Emma but .....
