Took Taylor to a local beach earlier today to enjoy the beautiful weather, and Taylor had a great time for a couple of hours - he paddled in the warm water for lengthy periods and even dug a hole in the wet sand. Met quite a few other dogs but he really latched onto a 11 month old male Bishon Frise-Pekingese cross and I got into a good conversation with the dog's owners as we waked along the beach. That was until we met a kite in action. Taylor was preoccupied with his newly found friend but the inevitable happened. He looked up in the bright blue cloudless sky and saw this frantically flying kite. What will he do, the people asked me, run home, I said. But the only trouble is we are a long way from home. So I raced after a retreating Taylor and put his leash on him and we quickly sped to the safety of Taylor's mum (my wife, Leigh) who had been sitting on the beach and reading a book.

poor taylor... i never know why these dogs find something they are so afraid of -Dillon has a fear of unopened umbrellas, paper towel cardboard tubes , my violin bow... he runs away like these things are going to hit him...we have never once ever hit him with anything so for this reaction we are at a loss.. I hope one day that Taylor can understand that the kite in the air will not come to get him. Do you have any large birds of prey there? Has he ever seen on flying in the air? if so does he show fear? I wonder - I had a bird that was very afraid of large birds of pray ( we had red tailed hawks in our area) and would cower in his cage which sat by a big window until that bird had flown by...

You were very fortunate to catch Taylor in time. It does make one wonder why they are afraid of certain things.

Emilie - now I can understand a fiddler's bow being scary. Went to a club on Friday night and an Irish band was playing - and what is an Irish band without a fiddler or two. Well this young woman was the highlight of the band. her strenous efforts outdid all the other five band members together. Irish music - especially the modern stuff - is pretty frantic. it makes rock and roll look like a snooze in the park. Anyway, the violinist's bow worked overtime and looked very threatening.
Taylor is right at home with any kind of bird, heavy machinery. He just sits and looks in wonderment at helicopters and low flying planes. But noisy fireworks, thunder and lightning and ----------kites, have no place in Taylor's world.

Poor Taylor, so glad you caught up with him.
Have you considered working with him on his issues with kites.
I saw a show (cant remember what the name was) were the dog has issues with hot air ballons, very interesting, it took a while and lots of treats but they worked through it.

The Bristol Motor Speedway's Nascar races are this weekend and four or five jets always patrol the skies. It is an awesome sight to see. I sit on my back deck and watch it every time. It is really better then the races. Anyway, last night when they were flying over and circling and flying back my corgi boys laid in the grass watching them fly back and forth. By the way, it makes one feel very patriotic & safe to know our boys & girls in blue are flying overhead.

Bonnie,
I have been to one Nascar Race a few years ago - Firecracker 500 - and I thought the best part were the jets fly by too! The race was fun but the jets do make you feel Patriotic for some reason...

I know when they start flying over it makes one want to stand and sing our National Anthem. One time you will have to come over during race weekend and sit on my back deck, drink sweet tea and watch the jets fly by. Awesome - it doesn't last very long but well worth the effort.

That would be wonderful Cindy - especially if it is Suntea - I will take mine without sugar please. The next race is in August.

Michael:
Glad to hear Taylor is safe and sound. Evil kites!
I am terrified of car races. I think it comes from when I was litttle my parents would take me to the NY State Fair and at the end of the day my Dad liked to go to the stock car races. If you don't know what it is, people fix up old cars and they basically ram each other around a track until the last one is standing - or at least that's what it seemed like to me. I thought I was watching numerous car crashes.
I remember putting my head in my mom's lap and not watching.
To this day, any car race seems like a death mission. Count me out!

Thanks for all the kind sentiments. Taylor did meet and look over a 'dead' kite not long ago and that was fine. But there is a vast difference between a living kite and an inactive one.
