Too Much Licking - 08-16-2007, 08:33 AM

Miller has a constant licking problem. He doesn't just lick to kiss ... He will continue to lick on you (like a nervous or compulsive type) and when he is finsihed with you he will lick the couch, the hardwood floor, the carpet, the air vents, the windows, himself ... The dog just constantly is licking ... I find that he gets a small froth on his bottom lip before he starts licking like he has too much saliva in his mouth. Has anyone else have this issue? Is there a term for it? He has been doing this since he was a puppy. The vet doesn't think it is a problem. My couch however does!

Is there a term for it

Obsessive Licking Disorder...OLD at least thats what we call it or just say Cody is the Mad Licker. Licks everything and especially people. It's like he knows if he licks you will pet him to get him to stop. Quit and he will lick again. He licks everything just like yours does. Drives me nuts.

To be diagnosed with lickacitis you will have to count how many licks per minute and how many per hour. Also, does his tongue go to full extension or are they short lick strokes?

hee hee Get those numbers and then we can have a definite call on that one!

Joni seems to love any time my fiance wears lotion. We are tying to work on a "enough" command for barking and stuff like licking. She is getting the idea. It might work for you too.

I call Miller the lickasauras and Molsen the poopasauras (he goes everytime we are out for our walk atleast 3 times in 1 mile).

I will try using "enough". We use "quiet" or "you got it" for the barking.

Colby also can't control his licker....it was cute in the beginning, but now its kind of annoying. Jamie hates it when he licks his hands and such and it doesnt bother me unless it gets excessive or im trying to sleep but i go nuts when he licks my ear and Jamie doesnt mind that...so go figure...we tell Colby that "kisses are fine but nobody likes a licker!!" he doesnt seem to care....

I think Miller is far too excessive with his tongue and it needs to be 'toned' down - definitely not eliminated though. A dog kisses and licks their family and specific other people mostly because of endearment. But constantly licking any object in sight for great periods of time is not a normal activity and can be very damaging to health - depending on what they are licking eg refer to children's toys with lead in the paint.

We are able to redirect the licking or get him to stop for a few minutes, but it seems that he does it out of nervousness or boredome. It is hard to get him to completely stop.

The other night ... Miller fell asleep while licking with is little tonge hanging out. It was too cute. I tried to get the camera, but he woke up in the processes.
