Whining - 12-10-2007, 09:08 PM

Waeryn whines a lot and I don't know why. It seems to be when she's really excited, not when she's upset. I don't want her to be a whiney dog for the rest of her life, it sounds so sad (even if it is just an excited noise, it sounds like she is crying)!...is there anything I need to do to prevent this, or is it normal?

maybe its just the way she talks. Daisy...b/f's dog does this. it's just adorable. She has so many different whines but they are how she talks. They are happy whines. She does thm when we play with her. She doesn't do them when she plays with the other dogs I don't think, just humans.

She doesn't do it at home much. She does it in the car while looking out the window, and she does it when I take her inside stores. The reason I'm concerned is because I think some people might be annoyed with it. I feel like I'm carrying around a crying baby (bouncing and sushing). It makes me feel like a bad mommy because everyone thinks she's doing it because she's unhappy. I get lots of "Awww, why is she so sad?" And I give lots of replies like "She whines when she's excited, I don't know why."

Don't worry about other people. It probably is like you said...that she is excited and wants to meet every one. She's a baby and you are not a bad mommy. Don't even think that. You are taking her out and exposing her to new things...socializing her. Katie growls when she is excited. LOL You would rather have the whine. You give her a belly rub and she growls and people thinks she going to bite them. I always have to say no she'e happy.

She's a baby for goodness sakes. Sounds like she's fairly vocal, and will most likely grow out of it.

I don't know if this will be helpful but from what I have gathered on this website is that if you reinforce a particular habit it will continue. So don't make a big fuss when she whines, try to ignore it.

By all means.....TRY to ignore it. My husband and I didn't when Duncan was little, so now he is a whiner. Whines for everything and it dones get on your nerves. I can ignore it longer than my husband (must be the mother in me...lol) But, most of the time, it's to go outside, which is a constant thing for him. The funny part is if he is whining and you ignore him, he'll get louder and louder; and if your on the couch he'll actually get in your face and whine the loudest to get your attention. Cracks me up sometimes. Then, when he realizes that your not paying any attention, he does a huff, jumps down and pouts.

Ignoring it or a low gruff voice with a enough or knock it off then ignore the behavior. Don't bow to her, stand up straight and act like you mean it. She isn't really taking you serious and that will haunt you down the road. She's a baby, but as the mom now, you have to make sure she knows what's acceptable.

I have a couple of whiners in the house, but one "enough" is all it takes for them to realize that it's not called for. Corgis do tend to be more vocial then other dogs and you have to learn what the sound means. Concern, begging, complaining, complementing! I allow some sounds, but an impatient whine is not one that I take kindly too.

Maybe that is all he is doing, is being vocal. The first corgi I had many years ago was completely opposite of what most corgis are. She was laid back, not vocal, not really a playful type. She didn't try to herd you and the only bark she would do is if someone strange was near the house. Duncan has all of the opposite traits that she had....and I wouldn't trade them for anything.
