Problems with puppy Agression, Biting - 12-22-2007, 08:05 AM

Hello all. I have Maggie now for two weeks. She is between 9 & 10 weeks. She is play biting, nipping (which I know is instinctive) , and being agressive with me & my girlfriend.
I have tried various things ( redirection, holding her mouth closed when she is agressive) nothing was working. I figured out that I should get down to her level and growled at her when she got out of hand. At 1st, she jumped out of her skin, and became submissive. Now after a couple of days of this, she is getting frustrated, and has become bossy about it, snapping back and howling in some sort of realization that she is trying to maintain control.
I want to instill my leadership is this house, and I want to know if anyone has advice. Do Corgi pups grow out of this?

Happy holidays,
Damien

Number one, stop growling at her. Someone gave you bad advice. She either thinks you are being aggressive (and that is scaring her) or she figured out that you're not really being aggressive and she thinks you're play-growling. Either way, growling is going to encourage her to nip more.

When she nips, try screaming a higher pitched "Owww!" or "Ouch!", then say "No biting!" in a very serious tone. The "Owww!" should sound like a dog squeal when one litter mate bites the other too hard. That should stop her at least momentarily. If she keeps at it, repeat the "Owww! No biting!" then walk away from her. No playing or attention for a few minutes will make her realize she did something wrong. If she keeps coming after you, you may need to have her "time out" in her kennel, bathroom or kitchen for several minutes.

The previous post is full of commonsense. The reward and praise methods are best. If it is not working, pick her up immediately following her misdemeanour, firmly but without any aggression and place her gently in to a quiet place - a bathroom or some other room or her crate - and leave her there for 10 minutes. Let her out without saying anything. Keep this up for a few weeks and let us know if there are any improvements.
