Chewing up his toys.. - 02-09-2008, 06:49 AM

Hi. Been a while since I've posted, but I seem to have a problem with Rocko. He's now 9 months and for the past 2 months or so he's been literally "eating" his toys. I switched to only buying him the canvas or hard rubber toys (I think they call them "tough" toys) and he's still eating them. Basically, if there is anything hanging off of them, he will find a way to rip it off. Last night we bought him one of those canvas "loofa dogs". Within an hour, he had the ears chewed through and pulled off a leg. I don't know what to do anymore! I could just get him plain toys with nothing on them, but he still finds ways to chew through the ends. The first toy he ever did this to he had pulled off the tail. We just chalked that one up to tail envy LOL.. but now it's getting ridiculous. Any suggestions??

Linda

Sorry I have no suggestions really as Colby stll does the same thing...and hes teaching Cammie a bad habit...he chews EVERYTHING!! At last count we are up to about 19 pairs of footwear between slippers, sneaks, boots, sandles...he has a fetish for leather and its my "Fault" for leaving them right in his nose...accoding to jamie that is....it gets sooooo annoying....he rips paper too...anything he can get his teeth on...our trainer said take the toy away as soon as you see it happening and teach them if they cant play nice they dont get to play..sometimes we do that....other times if i see him unstuffing, i take the toy and unstuff the rest of it and give it back empty...he will still play with them that way....so in short or i suppose long...we've been through many a duck, hedgie, loofah, rubber balls, kongs, nyla bones with you

Pip did the same thing until he was about 1 1/2. He used to enjoy just DESTROYING things and would then try to eat it. The only thing I can suggest is taking away the toys when you can't watch. I had a bag, put every single toy (except his kong and a couple of very hard balls) in it, when he couldn't be supervised, and he had supervised play time only. As the trainer suggested, I would warn him to play nice and take the toy away if he continued tearing it up. I still have to do this sometimes. Even then he twice gulped some pieces when I couldn't get them away fast enough. Very worrisome waiting and not pleasant, if they don't pass and come out. My vet said obstructions often don't show up on x-ray. Luckily, for me they were eventually vomitted up and surgery wasn't needed. The only toys he did not destroy were kongs and the really hard made for dogs tennis balls.

at least colby doesnt eat much of what he destroys....its just the ripping/tearing/unstuffing that seems fun to him...he then leaves me the mess to clean up all over the floor...he also likes to get the squeakers out and chew the plastic to bits...but again...not swallowing...just chewing...chew chew chew chew chew chew.....freak!!

Charlie can't have any stuffed toys unless I'm watching. Watching, that is, for the 10-15 minutes it takes him to rip the toy open and start unstuffing. I haven't bought him any stuffed toys in a while.

He does well with anything hard rubber (like Kong), soft latex squeekies, hard plastic (his Wiggly Giggly) and rope tugs. I buy him a new soccer ball now and then. He chews all the skin off in a week, and punctures them in a couple months! He does like to carry the old deflated soccer ball around.

Squeaker chewing is a big no no for me. There is not a shred of doubt that it would be swallowed or choked on, in my house. Now, we seem to be at the point where toys are only torn up if they are ripped during the normal wear and tear of play. Sometimes I try to sew the stuffed ones, kind of challenging for me (sewing is not one of my many skills), but most of the times (like today) I toss them as soon as they are ripped.

I like the soccer ball idea! I'm going to have to pick one up up and give it a try.

Westin no longer gets squeaker toys... for the same reason everyone else doesn't get them... stuffing all over the floor, he tries to eat it.... etc. we've had the best luck with ropes (that we cut the loose string off the ends of) and the hard plastic balls.... and also his puppy KONG frisbee. ((it's a soft flexible rubber that he hasn't put holes in yet!!))

I realize this is going to sound strange, (because it is) but, one of my friends had a piece of tire for their dog's chew toy. He must have cut it from the center of the tread and his dog bit the heck out of it. It showed no wear at all. I don't remember much (this was about 25 years ago) about it other than it was a chunk of hard rubber tire tread. As for Will I found a rubber ring coated in tennis ball material that seems rather durable...other than Will drops it down the basement stairs and it takes a while to locate it again.
