Corgis brainwaves

Here is a thread that might be interesting.

What brainwaves has your Corgu/s displayed. In other words what 'tricks' or non-Corgi antics can your Corgi do that has not been labouriously taught by you or another person.

Here is a starter. Connie, a 7 year old Pem can get on her back legs, stretch up and lift up with her muzzle the latch of one of the gates at her home which gets her from the backyard to the front area of the property. Connie has learnt how to unlatch the gate simply from observation.

When Radar hears a door bell on TV he runs barking to the door. Our house does not have a door bell. He learned from the Dominos commercials that "Ding, Dong" means theres pizza at the door.

Nick can be very manipulative he has learned not only to respond to my interaction but he figured out how to get me to respond to his interaction. for example if he wants me to play catch with him. On his own without any prompting he will grab a tennis ball march it over to me and drop it at my feet. Also if he wants his belly rubbed he will lay on his side wait for someone to walk by. When he s approach he will roll over on his back give a wave with him paw.

Connie once again proves to be an extremely clever and have a discerning mind. Reminds me of one of my sister's old Cardigan girls that has figured out how to open crate doors. When it is feeding time, she watches the other dogs and when they appear to be finished and have not cleaned their bowls (the Pugs are particularly prone to doing this) Caroline will open their crate doors; let them out and then do "dish washing duty" by cleaning up any food they have left.

Mine can tell time. Like weekdays when they know David has to be up early or when it hits 8:00 and it's dinner time. Regardless if I am watching tv, a movie, reading a book or have the radio on, they all come to attention at 8 and stare at me until I ask-is anyone hungry?

I also have one girl who waits for the cat to stick her paw under the door then bites it. Or the one that lies in wait during games of chase and attacks as the other dog runs by-heck why waste the energy in the running part. Even better is the one who waits near the feed bunk and stands under the horse's head and grabs spillage in the air as the horse eats.

Duchess and Powder (the cat) know they get fed at five o'clock.twice a day. The cute thing is they seem to turn and look up at the clock while they sit in front of us to tell us it's feeding time.

Chloe, my mixed corgi/chow will sit in front of the TV when it's off, and then keep looking back at us and then the TV; wanting it turned on. She loves Star Wars, basketball and NASCAR....such a silly dog.

Charlie showed his willingness to "protect me" yesterday. My neighbor and I had Charlie and her dog out on a walk when two large roaming dogs approached us and were refusing to leave us alone. I attempted a couple of times to say "Go home!" fairly softly so as not to get Charlie excited. The dogs kept circling and reapproaching. The dogs did not appear to be mean, but my friend's dog is very fearful and the dogs were interfering with our walk. Finally, I said a sharp loud "OUT!". Guess that was Charlie's untaught command. He barked sharply three or four times at the dogs and they ran on their way. My friend said "Charlie saved us from the big dogs!" I was proud that he stayed calm until I lost my patience, then he backed me up. Not something I really expect (or necessarily want) my little guy to do, but it was an interesting show of instinct versus trained behavior.

You know as well as I that once I start there would be no stopping. No would be allowed in the house without pizza.

Diamond taught herself to sit and lie down by watching me teach Woody.

Sparky could unlatch gates too. He's open it let the other dogs out and he'd stay in the yard. We solved the problem by putting a snap hook on the gate.

Solo would herd Bernie into the house when they were called to come in. Bernie had gone deaf.

We don't have a doggy door so we have to let Ein in and out of the back door which is in the living room. At night time she constantly wants to go in and out in and out. If we don't pay attention to her she will go and sit right under to TV and looks straight up to us.

I thought of another one. Merlin has an afghan (blanket not dog!) that he sleeps on. It's usually at the foot of my bed. If it gets chilly at night he will drag it over by the heater and curl up on it there. Pretty bright if you ask me!

There are many instances that show just how brainy a Corgi can be. Just a few hours ago, Taylor told me in no uncertain words, that he wanted his dinner. We had a big day out - a 90 minite romp in the bush/forest, an hour having a picnic lunch and roaming around, and then 90 minutes looking at international jugglers at a park and mingling with the crowd and then one hour visiting friends. I told Taylor wait until the half time break of a rugby match I was watching live on tv. He went away but came rushing down the stairs at full steam 10 minutes later and screamed at me. My young son called out that he had tried to pick up Taylor and Taylor had lunged at his ear. So Taylor's screamimg was: I don't want that 'brother' of mine, picking me up awkwardly and hurting me especially when I am desperately hungry. So I didn't muck around any further and Taylor got his dinner and all was at peace.

Why is it when you are watching something you really don't want to miss on TV, the dog wants to go out? I used to watch "All Creatures Great and Small" one day a week and the dogs would hear the theme music come on and want to go out. Duchess does the same thing to me. By the way I still watch "Creatures" when it is rerun.
