Barking Corgis
Saw an hour long episode of Cesar Millan's Dog Whisperer last night and he certainly showed and proved how one can quickly reduce the barking habits of overly barking dogs including Corgis and most of the reasons why dogs bark so continuously and fervorantly as some do.

C'mon Michael...we're dying to know how Cesar stopped the barking dogs. I suspect it went something like this:
"I am Cesar Milan. I reehabilitate docs. I train peepal. I yam; thee Doc Wheezperer. So the owner haf barking doc. I tell thee owner 'Doc don know why not to bark cause you haven taught doc rules, boundaries an leemeetaytions, see?' I show you. Put your hand out like dees and say, 'Chshhhht!'....'Chshhhht!'...."Hey, hey, hey"...."Chshhhhht!" That's eet. See? 'Chssshhhht!'...."Chssshhhhht!' That's all you need. Now you try. Thaaat's bedder. Docs need exercise, deescipline, an affectseeeon. I am Cesar Milan. An I yam; thee Doc Wheezperer."

You need to see the episode to appreciate the conditions and the results. It's a lot to do with body language and the empowerment of the handler and in taking the dog to where he/she has transgressed moments before eg front door, in car, and displaying calmness through leadership. Re the car, a lot of the particular problem was that the dog was allowed to jump into the car and onto the seat. But when Millan picked up the dog and placed him/her on the seat, the situation of the dog's demeanor changed.
But there are other little things along the way that reinforces what a dog really wants and needs. Incessant barking and other poor behaviour may be the result of insufficient exercising ie not done daily, inadequate time and effort, constantly covering the same route which can be tedious for an intelligent dog who longs for different sights, sounds and smells. My Pem Charlie is a bit of a charlie (the person not the Corgi) and needs to look beyond such a small horizon. |

Well, Charlie made me laugh this morning after reading Michael's response and then Charlie's post. I generally read the threads backward from the latest post, but this time it made more sense than usual. |
